PEORIA, Ill.---The Chicago Wolves forced overtime with a late third period goal, but suffered an eventual 6-5 shootout loss to the Peoria Rivermen at Carver Arena Saturday night.
Forwards Tim Miller (2G, A) lead a pack of four Wolves players with multiple points, while right wings Darren Haydar (G, A) and Spencer Machacek and defenseman Paul Postma potted goals for Chicago. Left wing Andrew Kozek was the only Chicago player to score in the shootout while goaltender Peter Mannino stopped two of Peoria’s four attempts.
Chicago (32-25-3-5) tied the score at five with 3:10 left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Center Jason Krog dug the puck out behind the net and fed it to Machacek, who ripped the puck past Allen, top shelf.
Peoria (35-23-2-4) opened scoring 3:18 into the game when right wing Chris Langkow shot a wrister that dropped down and slipped through the legs of Mannino.
The Wolves responded with a power-play marker to even the score at 1-1. Miller stood at the doorstep and popped the rebounded puck into the net behind Peoria netminder Jake Allen 5:27 into the first frame.
Postma made the score 2-1 in favor of Chicago when he ripped a shot from the blueline past Allen, glove side, 9:13 into the opening period.
The Rivermen tied the score at two on the power-play when defenseman Derek Peltier shot from the point through traffic beating Mannino 11:53 into the first period.
Chicago pulled ahead to 3-2, 6:46 into the second period when Haydar reached around from behind the goal and put the puck past Allen.
Peoria answered 10:30 into the middle frame to bring the score to 3-3 with a power-play tally. Right wing Graham Mink dug the puck out in front of the net and flicked it past Mannino.
The Wolves took back the lead, 4-3, when Miller wrapped the puck around past Allen 14:15 into the second frame.
Allen (20-13-3) recorded 24 saves in regulation and overtime and stopped four of five attempts in the shootout.
Rivermen right wing Dave Spina leveled the score to 4-4 when he grabbed the puck at the side of the crease and slid it past Mannino 3:57 into the third period.
Mannino (15-15-4) thwarted 32 shots in regulation and overtime.
Peoria brought the score to 5-4, 13:51 into the third frame defenseman Nathan Oystrick fired a blast from the left faceoff circle into the back of the net.
The Wolves return to the Allstate Arena to take on the Manitoba Moose on Sun., March 6 at 3 p.m.
