Wolves Fight Off Rampage, 5-3

Left wing Brett Sterling led the way for Chicago (22-16-0-2) with two goals in the first period to help the club extend a season-high four-game winning streak. Centers Jason Krog and Matt Anderson and right wing Tim Stapleton also added multiple points with two assists each.

San Antonio (17-18-3-2) jumped on the board on their second shot of the game just 24 seconds into the first period. Left wing Brett MacLean picked up a rebound in the corner and faked the defense before roofing a shot over Wolves netminder Drew MacIntyre’s shoulder.

Sterling tied it up for Chicago on the power play midway through the first frame. Krog sent the puck across the ice to Stapleton, who took a slap shot that brought Rampage goaltender Josh Tordjman out of position. With the net wide open, Sterling was able to slam in the rebound for the goal.

Sterling netted his second goal of the game 2:34 later. He picked up a puck in the corner, wrapped around the back of the net and squeezed the puck between Tordjman and the near post to give the Wolves the 2-1 lead.

Right wing Joey Crabb gave Chicago a 3-1 lead with another power-play tally at 18:29 of the first period. Anderson passed the puck behind the net to right wing Anthony Stewart. Stewart then passed it out front to a crouching Crabb who was waiting at the top of the crease and lifted it up and over Tordjamn for the goal.

Tordjman posted six saves in the first period before being replaced by Justin Pogge (4-5-1) to begin the second. Pogge thwarted 21 of 22 shots he faced.

San Antonio cut the lead to one on their second of two back-to-back power plays to open up the second period. Defenseman Sean Sullivan took a hard shot from the point that found its way past MacIntyre after a deflection on a defenseman’s skate in front of the net at 1:48.

At 2:54 of the third stanza, the Rampage lit the lamp again. MacLean took a shot from the boards that found its way through traffic and MacIntyre’s pads to make the score even at three apiece.

MacIntyre (11-11-1) recorded 41 saves in the winning effort.

Oystrick netted the game-winning goal for the Wolves at 17:57 of the final frame. Stapleton sent a pass across to Oystrick, who one-timed a slap shot from the slot that flew under Pogge’s shoulder to give the Wolves a 4-3 lead.

Right wing Spencer Machacek rounded out the scoring with an empty net goal at 19:04 of the third period.

The Wolves play their second of two back-to-back matchups against the Rampage at the AT&T Center tomorrow at 7 p.m.
