Flood Brothers Disposal & Recyclingand the Wolves have teamed up this season to provide fun, and easy recycling tips to help make Chicago a “greener” city. Here are 10 “Recycling Tips from the Pros":
Tip #1
Buy recycled paper and print on both sides. By recycling one ton of paper, we save 17 trees and almost 7,000 gallons of water.
Tip #2
Recycle your outdated technology. Americans throw out more than 2 million tons of electronic waste each year. Avoid adding to that waste by recycling your old technology.
Tip #3
Ensure recycling bins are readily available. Convenience is a large factor when it comes to recycling, so equip your home and office with labeled bins.
Tip #4
Recycle your empty ink and toner cartridges. Americans discard nearly 700,000 cartridges per day when many supply stores offer convenient (and cheap) ink replacement.
Tip #5
Reuse your morning coffee cup. Or, better yet, bring your favorite travel mug on your daily Dunkin’ Donuts coffee run to avoid the waste caused by Styrofoam.
Tip #6
Start using reusable grocery bags, if possible. And, if you do use plastic bags, take your leftovers back to grocery stores (i.e. your local Jewel-Osco) where they are collected and reused to make plastic lumber.
Tip #7
Recycle junk mail or reuse it as scratch paper. Or, even better, you can opt out of many mailing lists by visiting http://opt-out.cdt.org/
Tip #8
Recharge your batteries. It takes 1,000 regular batteries to equal the lifespan of one rechargeable battery. And if you do discard your alkaline batteries, be sure to take them to a recycling center.
Tip #9
Divide and conquer. Divvy up recycling duties among family members so that each person plays a part in your family’s recycling effort.
Tip #10
Cloth > paper. Use cloth napkins and rags for everyday household messes instead of paper towels and napkins.
